The Key is to Personalize (it)

What is it?
It is anything that people want, see, use or need…or just anything, period. Why do homeowners hang their pictures on their walls and place their family treasures all over their house? Why, when we buy a gidget or a gadget, do we long for unique options that the majority of other buyers wouldn’t ever think or pay to have? Why do we love putting new pictures of ourselves on Facebook or on Flickr? Why do millions of Americans have blogs? Why is Twitter breaking through? Why do companies have signature logos?
Why?
One reason out of many: We long for personalization. We love to take something that is available to the masses, possibly even something that is free, and make it our own. And not only do we like to personalize, but we love the thought that maybe our personalized effort is or someday will be the best out of all the other personalized somethings that are fundamentally the same. We all need and many times want the same things, yet most of us desire to have it be unique at the same time.
Here’s a start: Create something that is fundamentally the same, yet allow enough freedom for your customers to customize that something. Even better, take something we all already own and make it customizable. People want uniqueness, and they want to share their uniqueness with others thus creating similarities between them. Most of us want the same things, yet we want them to be slightly different or special. Find a way to do this. Help a lot of people. Be a success.
